FILM: Saint Laurent

Yves Saint Laurent’s life from 1967 to 1976, during which time the famed fashion designer was at the peak of his career.

In this controversial and unauthorized biography, we see that not only did St. Laurent define himself and his design style during this period, but through both his persona and his business, made an indelible mark on the very era. Director Bertrand Bonello’s trademark fascination with the sensual, the sensory and the hedonistic makes a perfect fit to explore St. Laurent’s now-mythological decade of deliverance. With stunning attention to detail, including a climactic recreation of St. Laurent’s revolutionary Moroccan-inspired 1976 collection, Bonello captures the spirit of creative genius in a time of great freedom, even as emotional vertigo threatened St. Laurent’s own spectacular heights.

A brilliant cast, including Jeremie Renier as St. Laurent’s life and business partner Pierre Berge (who refuses to this day to lend credence to Bonello’s film) and Louis Garel as St. Laurent’s male model lover, as well as Helmut Berger and Brady Corbet in memorable appearances, add to the rich, luxurious texture of the hunt for beauty and perfection.

FILM: Iris

IRIS pairs legendary 87-year-old documentarian Albert Maysles with Iris Apfel, the quick-witted, flamboyantly dressed 93-year-old style maven who has had an outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades.

More than a fashion film, the documentary is a story about creativity and how, even in Iris’ dotage, a soaring free spirit continues to inspire. IRIS portrays a singular woman whose enthusiasm for fashion, art and people are life’s sustenance and reminds us that dressing, and indeed life, is nothing but an experiment. Despite the abundance of glamour in her current life, she continues to embrace the values and work ethic established during a middle-class Queens upbringing during the Great Depression. “I feel lucky to be working. If you’re lucky enough to do something you love, everything else follows.”

FILM: Dior and I

DIOR AND I

DIRECTED BY: FRÉDÉRIC TCHENG | 2015 | 1H 30M | UNRATED

Filmmaker Frédéric Tcheng follows up his work on excellent fashion films, including Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel and Valentino: The Last Emperor, with another masterful exploration of a towering fashion institution.

In DIOR AND I, one enters the storied world that is the House of Christian Dior with a privileged, behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Raf Simons’ highly anticipated first Haute Couture collection as the iconic brand’s new Artistic Director. From conception through its ultimate exhibition, the process is shown to be a true labor of love by the stoic Simons and a dedicated, charming, and often humorous team of collaborators. Beautifully melding the everyday, pressure-filled components of fashion with an elegant reverence for the history of Dior, Tcheng’s colorful homage to the seamstresses of the atelier is nothing short of magical.
